In our age of “polycrisis,” wherein multiple seismic events occur simultaneously, artist Olivia Erlanger visualizes our place in a world that is no longer recognizable. Her video installation in an exploded reconstructed set, dioramas of fantastical worlds, cantilevered planets, and a constellation of arrows piercing a Brutalist staircase, reimagine what it means to inhabit our planet.

Shifting between notions of home—as an architecture, a neighborhood, a world, or even a feeling—Erlanger continues her decade-long disruption of what she refers to as the “semiotics of suburbia,” or the symbols and myths of suburban life. Published on the occasion of Erlanger’s first

U.S. solo exhibition at Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, If Today Were Tomorrow contains newly commissioned texts from Lydia Kallipoliti, Chris Kraus, Patricia Restrepo, and Mark von Schlegell on Erlanger’s practice and the interplay between architecture, psychology, and science fiction.
