In collaboraton with the exhibiton Tomashi Jackson: Across the Universe, we present the
Tomashi Jackson’s Ecology of Fear (Abrams for Governor of Georgia) (Negro Women wait to congratulate LBJ) Tote.

Description of the work:
Building upon her longstanding interest in architecture and public spaces, in 2018 Tomashi Jackson began employing awning-like wooden armatures in her paintings. In Ecology of Fear (2020), the canvas is angled forward at the bottom, allowing the vinyl strips to extend beyond the frame of the painting. The translucent colors printed on PVC are illuminated by the passage of light and projected onto the floor below. This awning structure is inspired by the plastic strip door curtains at the entrances to bodegas and industrial spaces.

This painting includes abstracted images from the 1960s of civil rights activists that are layered over 2018 election ephemera from state representative Stacey Abrams’s bid for governor of Georgia.
